Math Madness Wednesdays: Fractions

March 11, 2014 by Krista Leave a Comment

It is Wednesday, which means it is time for some Math Madness!  This week’s topic is FRACTIONS!!  I know, many people dread fractions, but I actually enjoy teaching this topic!  Fractions are one of the most used math topics we teach (think:  cooking, redecorating, home improvement, etc.).  How can we make fractions more fun for students and help them to understand them better?
I think one of the easiest ways is to use them often!  Anytime I see a fraction in my classroom (or an opportunity to mention one), I bring it up.  Not just during our “fraction unit,” but anytime throughout the year!  I also like have pictures and/or posters of fractions and what they look like hanging in my room as a reference.  (Of course, those have to come down during those dreaded state assessments, but that is a WHOLE other topic for a different day!)

How do students learn the best?  Many of them do so by using games to help them practice.  To help students practice fractions, I use these cards to play games like Fraction War.  Each card includes a fraction and a picture.By keeping these games in my rotation of games to choose from, students are exposed to fractions all year rather than just during one unit.  And, they like the games!    These are available in my store for 50% off until Saturday!

What do you do to help kids better understand fractions?
